2017 Remodeling Excellence Award
This Burr Ridge family needed more space near their breakfast room for entertaining, dining and spending time together. They wanted a sunroom addition, but felt strongly that the new space needed to look like an original part of the home. Normandy Designers Kathryn O’Donovan and Troy Pavelka were able to deliver this new, family-friendly space, all while preserving the home’s architectural integrity.
“It can be hard to visualize how an addition will blend with your existing home,” said Kathryn. “But you can certainly match the new with the old. It just takes careful consideration of materials and an eye for detail.”
“When it’s done right, the new addition looks like it’s always been there,” added Kathryn.
In the case of this sunroom, the brick is nearly identical and the exterior walls were predominantly constructed with windows and door openings to match the existing aesthetic. These windows also fill the space with natural light and take advantage of the views to the private back and side yards.
A hip roof was chosen to match the architecture of the home, but this design decision came with its challenges.
“The homeowners were thrilled with this pitched roof, as it really blended with the home,” said Troy. “However, this style roof was in conflict with the master bedroom windows. To fix this issue, we removed the existing windows and installed three smaller ones within the same horizontal opening.”
“We then patched everything back up with stucco, taking great care to match the rest of the home,” said Troy.
The hip roof not only works well for the home’s exterior. It also allowed for the interior to have a tray ceiling, so the space feels really open.
This seamless sunroom addition creates a transition between the kitchen and outdoor space, giving this family a new hub for gathering, dining and entertaining. It also received a Remodeling Excellence Award from the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) of Greater Chicagoland.
