2011 Remodeling Excellence Award

Budget Conscious Addition Wins NARI Design Award

These homeowners are lucky enough to have a backyard that blends right into a forest preserve, and desired a room that allowed them to fully appreciate their view.  They began working with Normandy Designer Gary Cerek to create a sunroom addition off of their existing kitchen which would include an eating area and lounge space, and of course, overlook their beautiful backyard.

Budget was of the utmost importance, so the homeowners were open to new ideas throughout the design process that allowed them to stay within their price range while achieving their goals.

For instance, they were looking for full height windows with a transom above, but the combination heavily increased the cost of the overall project.  “I suggested a casement height that would give the same effect as transoms, without the additional cost,” said Gary.  This smart design allowed the clients to stay within budget while meeting their goals.

Another request by the client was to add a new island to their existing kitchen in order to allow informal seating for three to four people.  The homeowners wanted to match the existing kitchen cabinetry to the island as closely as possible.

We were able to salvage an existing base cabinet left over from the home’s initial construction, and Normandy’s wonderfully skilled trim carpenters worked their magic to create a custom island the homeowners were delighted with.  In the end, the homeowners goal of feeling immersed in nature was achieved – with style at that! The home was recognized with a First Place 2011 Remodeling Excellence Award from National Association Remodeling Industry (NARI) Greater Chicagoland in the Residential Additions under $100,000 category. This award winning design demonstrates that your plausible remodeling goals are completely attainable within your budget, as long as you’re working with an open mind and a smart design.
