Forever Home: Cottage Edition

A maintenance-free forever home that is safe, secure, and functional is essential when remodeling to age in place. When this Deerfield homeowner enlisted veteran Normandy Designer Bill Peterson to help redesign her exterior, she had already decided that this would be her forever home. Her goal was to undergo one last major renovation to create a maintenance free exterior, with minimal future upkeep.

“While looking for ways to transition to a more timeless, cottage feel, we were inspired by a painting in her dining room that was just that; a white, colonial home with red accented shutters,” said Bill. “Although she is now visually impaired, we were delighted that the she clearly remembered this painting. After seeing the emotion this painting ignited, we knew exactly what needed to be done; we needed to bring this painting to life.”

Beginning with the façade, we were able to incorporate more proportionate windows that were clad instead of wood, making them maintenance free. “Building a brand new covered front porch was also a much needed addition, to shelter her from the elements,” Bill adds. “By siding the entire home in a classic white cement board, we were able to bring the painting to life and create the traditional cottage feel she wanted.” The results of living through the first phase went well and we are now excited to be planning the kitchen and main floor bathroom for further aging in place advantages with a custom kitchen and new accessible shower.
